Beanstalk Solar Hosting traces its beginnings to the year 2000, when our parent company, Unleaded Software, launched web hosting services in support of its award-winning website design and development activities. Unleaded Software, founded in 1996, knew the web way back when, and has consistently added on to its expertise, capabilities, technologies and knowledge base to remain a leader in best-of-breed Internet services.
Going Green
A key part of this evolution was the branding of our web hosting services under the Beanstalk Solar Hosting banner in 2008, as technological advances in our facilities made it possible for us to fulfill a vital need in America’s Internet infrastructure: a concern for the environment and a plan to lower, and help others on the Internet lower, the overall carbon footprint. We think green and act green. And we operate at the same and better levels we would if we’d not gone green.
The Solar Solution
Beanstalk Solar Hosting is powered by a 3.7 kilowatt solar electric photovoltaic (PV) system installed by Adobe Solar, based in Colorado. This grid-tied solar PV system has been mounted on the roof just above the Beanstalk Solar Hosting servers and is made up of (20) 185 Watt Mitsubishi Solar Panels and (1) Frontius Solar Inverter. Taking advantage of Colorado’s 300+ days of sunshine, this solar PV system is expected to produce an average of 410 Kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per month. Over the next 30 years, this system will use the free energy from the sun to offset more than 189,000 lbs of CO2, equivalent to driving 220,000 miles, according to Greg Koss owner of http://www.adobesolar.com. In addition to providing clean renewable solar electricity, the system is expected to provide savings of over $48,000.00 in electrical costs.
Sensible Power Redundancy
Our solar array is connected to the national power grid through one of the most prominent utility companies in America, Xcel Energy. In essence, our electric meter runs backwards most of the time, feeding excess, solar-generated power back into the grid, but when the need arises we can tap the vast power resources of Xcel Energy to keep everything up and running. Then we go one step further: we employ automatic power generators on our rooftop that guarantee uninterrupted power supplies should our solar system and the grid experience outages. We’re green, but we back it up with sensible redundancy.
Smaller Carbon Footprint
And we’re always looking for ways to further reduce our carbon footprint, and in the process bring an ecological advantage to our clients. As an example, we always are on the prowl for new technology in our hosting environment, and energy efficiency is one of the key factors we look for. Indeed, our new Intel X25-M SSD solid state server was selected not only because it is the fastest and most powerful server technology on the market today, but also because it uses approximately 1/5 of the power required by standard servers. This is just another example of our commitment eco-friendly hosting operations in a top-tier technological environment.
